{"id":1875,"date":"2019-12-16T09:35:44","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T08:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/?post_type=documentaire&#038;p=1875"},"modified":"2021-12-08T07:44:16","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T06:44:16","slug":"the-daily-lives-of-the-slaves-on-the-desbassayns-estate","status":"publish","type":"documentaire","link":"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/en\/documentaires\/slavery\/the-conditions-and-daily-lives-of-slaves\/the-daily-lives-of-the-slaves-on-the-desbassayns-estate\/","title":{"rendered":"The daily lives of the slaves on the Desbassayns estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In Reunion, there exist few places other than Vill\u00e8le that, over such a small area, contain such a large number of constructions and vestiges bearing witness to the island\u2019s past of slavery: mansion, sugar factory, slave hospital, chapel where many were married etc.<\/h2>\n<p>When sugar cane took the place of coffee as the island\u2019s main crop, this led to important changes in the landscape and economy of the Madame Desbassayns\u2019 estate, as well as in the daily lives of her slaves.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 525px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-1875-1\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" poster=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/poster_miranville-1.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Miranville_2_Eng_sub.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Miranville_2_Eng_sub.mp4\">https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Miranville_2_Eng_sub.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h3>Their environment<br \/>\nThe estate and its economic activities<\/h3>\n<p>Both a place of residence and an agricultural exploitation, the Panon Desbassayns estate formed a small society where food was grown, animals raised and cash crops grown for export. Abbot Macquet, in his account of visits made there in the mid 1840s, describes it as a principality, with a chief and several ministers at its head<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.09074791893744827\" aria-label=\"Abb\u00e9 Macquet, Six ann\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00cele Bourbon, \u00c9ditions Alfred Cattier, 1893, Tours, page 79. According to the author, this principality has its \u201cministry of the interior, responsible for the (slave) camp; its ministry of public works, in charge of the plantation, the sugar-cane crop and the manufacture of sugar; its ministry of finances, in charge of revenue and spending (\u2026) its ministry of religious practice\u2026 .\u201d \">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h4>Establishment and spatial layout of the estate of Saint-Gilles<\/h4>\n<p>The origin of the estate was a first plot assigned in 1698 to Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Mollet, widow of Mr Duhal and Henri Paulin Panon Desbassayns\u2019 maternal grandmother. It was located \u2018above Saint-Gilles\u2019, between the ravines of Saint-Gilles and L\u2019Ermitage. This concession measured approximately half a mile in length and a quarter of a mile in width<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.3931651710005535\" aria-label=\"Antoine Boucher, Monograph: M\u00e9moire pour servir \u00e0 la connoissance de chacun des habitans de l\u2019Isle Bourbon, followed by Notes by P\u00e8re Barassin, \u00c9ditions ARS Terres Cr\u00e9oles, La R\u00e9union, 1989, page 316.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A number of conflicts arose between Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Mollet and her neighbours, mentioned in the deed assigning the plot to her in 1727, which more precisely determined the limits and size of the property: 3,262 metres in length and 856 metres in width<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.025677854689680313\" aria-label=\"Departmental Archives of Reunion (ADR), C\u00b0 1919, acte (article) N\u00b0 86. In this article, the dimensions are given in \u2018gaulettes\u2019, a unit of measurement used in the countryside in Reunion until quite recently, equivalent of 15 feet of 33 cm, corresponding to 4.95 metres, sometimes rounded up to 5 metres.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. It was not, however, rectangular<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.24786011747955916\" aria-label=\"ADR, C\u00b0 1919. This article N\u00b0 74 notes that, measured solely at its base, the plot \u201cwill decrease or increase in width, as will the neighbouring plots, in accordance with the narrowing or widening of the upper sections of the river valleys.\u201d \">&nbsp;<\/span> and was located at an altitude of between 250 m and 500 m, above and at edge of the savannah grassland where, on 20th December 1731, a decree issued by the Higher Council of Bourbon island cancelled and prohibited all annexing and purchasing of land. The text stipulated that the grassland was to remain common to all landowners of neighbouring plots, to be used for grazing their animals<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.2490093737689607\" aria-label=\"Abb\u00e9 Meersseman, Historique de Saint-Gilles-Les-Hauts, ADR, bib 2126.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It was here, on this plot, that were later constructed the mansion, the factory, the chapel and the first huts of the slave camp, the initial core around which the estate of Panon Desbassayns was created.<br \/>\nUpon her death in 1753, widow Duhal left equal parts of the estate to her two daughters. The first, the widow of Andr\u00e9 Rault<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.32301346328646097\" aria-label=\"The name is sometimes spelt Raux.\">&nbsp;<\/span>, had six children and subdivided her plot into the the same number of sections. As for Augustin Panon (1694-1772), the husband of the second Duhal daughter, he divided his plot only between two of his sons: Fran\u00e7ois Joseph Panon du Hazier and Henri Paulin Panon Desbassayns. The latter was named Debassayns because he inherited a plot located in the district of Trois-Bassins.<\/p>\n<p>Like most of the settlers granted land above Saint-Gilles, widow Duhal did not live there, but used the land for growing crops<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.9620906026745826\" aria-label=\"Boucher, op. cit., pages 47, 75, 185 et 316-317.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. According to the poet and agronomist Auguste de Vill\u00e8le (1858-1943), great-grandson of Madame Desbassayns<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.060895524927822464\" aria-label=\"La famille Panon-Desbassayns, \u00c0 la m\u00e9moire de vieux colons fran\u00e7ais et de quelques-uns de leurs descendants, Bulletin de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de La R\u00e9union, year 1928, volume 9, pages 99-134.\">&nbsp;<\/span>, Augustin Panon was the first to settle there, in a timber house. As from 1780, his son, Henri Paulin Panon Desbassayns, purchased the plots belonging to his brother Panon du Hazier\u2019s children, then a few plots belonging to Andr\u00e9 Rault\u2019s heirs. By the time of his death in 1800, he had more than doubled the area he had originally inherited.<\/p>\n<p>When she was widowed, Hombeline Gonneau Montbrun, from then on more commonly known as Madame Desbassayns, continued to expand the estate. On her death in 1846, the latter covered an area of 378 hectares<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.4118530231972346\" aria-label=\"ADR, 6 M 708, census document.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. The area available for growing crops covered approximately 300 hectares and the 500 hectares of savannah grassland had not yet been annexed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this estate in Saint-Gilles, Madame Desbassayns owned another, 3km away as the crow flies, located between the river beds of Divon and Bernica<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.018766687346654543\" aria-label=\"Archives D\u00e9partementales, cote 6 M 593. Named after the river. \">&nbsp;<\/span>, at an altitude of 500m at its lowest level, an estate she inherited from her father Julien Gonneau Montbrun when he died in 1801.<\/p>\n<h4>The economic activities on the estate of Saint-Gilles<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_811\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-811\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-811 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances-768x522.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cafe-de-toutes-provenances-1024x695.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Special coffee growers\u2019 hut: 2nd half 19th century. <br \/>De Vill\u00e8le historical museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 18th century was an intense period for the growing of coffee in the district around Saint-Gilles. The mansion, the construction of which was completed in 1788, had a roof terrace where coffee was laid out to dry after harvesting. According to Auguste de Vill\u00e8le, the growing of cotton, the seeds of which Henri Paulin had brought back from India, \u201c<em>competed with that of coffee and food (crops)<\/em>.<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.34476342325896314\" aria-label=\"Bulletin de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de La R\u00e9union, volume 9, year 1928, page 109.\">&nbsp;<\/span>\u201d However, there is no longer any record of cotton production in the 1823 statistics<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.08850697155824894\" aria-label=\"ADR, 6 M 593.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. In 1815, it already covered just 7 hectares, compared to 27 for coffee<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.8312605302557436\" aria-label=\"Danielle Baret, Monographie d\u2019une habitation coloniale \u00e0 Bourbon : la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 Desbassayns 1770-1846, Paris, 1977, University Paris 1, ADR, 8J 15 or 8J 61.\">&nbsp;<\/span> and 250 for maize<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.7893602106800797\" aria-label=\"A brief issued by the French East India Company in the mid 18th century notes that low-lying plots with dry sandy soil are the most appropriate for planting cotton, while on higher ground production is low and the quality poor. (ADR, C\u00b02822).\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1817, the traveller Auguste Billiard, living in a house neighbouring that of Madame Desbassayns, in his book<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.3224077396741931\" aria-label=\"Auguste Billiard, Voyage aux colonies orientales, ARS Terres Cr\u00e9oles, Saint-Denis de La R\u00e9union, 1990, page 65.\">&nbsp;<\/span> mentioned the destruction of most of the island\u2019s coffee plants, following the cyclones and period of drought of 1806. In his opinion, many of the settlers abandoned the crop because they could not wait the four to seven years needed for the young plants to achieve maturity. Lieutenant Frappaz, on the other hand, put the decline of coffee down to a steady decrease in rainfall, rather than to exceptional climatic events, declaring that the rain was seen to \u201c<em>fall along the upper forests neighbouring (the) lovely plantation<\/em>\u201d<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.561902653080814\" aria-label=\"Raymond Decary, Les voyages du lieutenant de vaisseau Frappaz dans les mers des Indes et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00eele Bourbon, Bulletin de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de l'\u00eele de La R\u00e9union, volume 15, year 1938.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This probably explains why the estate of Bernica, located at a rather cooler and more humid altitude, was chosen for the first experiments in growing sugar cane and the construction of a sugar factory.<\/p>\n<p>It was the estate of Saint-Gilles, however, that became the object of Madame Desbassayns\u2019 attentions. She entrusted its management to her son Charles, through an agreement signed in 1822<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.7956943618542365\" aria-label=\"Danielle Baret, Monographie d\u2019une habitation coloniale \u00e0 Bourbon, \u2026, op.cit.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. One of the main assets of the estate was its short distance from the coast, where Madame Desbassayns set up her warehouses. In 1829, she had a road laid down between these and her factory, the location of which corresponds to the current road known as <em>Chemin Carrosse<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the estate was not dedicated solely to monoculture of a crop for export. In 1805, long before the damage caused to the coffee plants by the extreme climate events occurring in 1806-1807, food crops (maize, wheat, vegetables and potatoes) already covered 85% of the agricultural land, compared to just 15% for coffee<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.7964599801027041\" aria-label=\"ADR, L222\/2.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1846, when sugar cane was thriving, the latter covered over 34% of the agricultural land, compared to approximately 61% for food crops<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.7956800218230649\" aria-label=\"ADR, 6M708.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. Maize alone ranked first, with 118 ha, representing close to 50% of the acreage sown, way ahead of the various vegetable crops (8,3%) and cassava (4,5%). The latter thus did not replace maize as the staple food for the slaves and animals, despite the recommendations made by Joseph Desbassayns and the instructions issued by his brother Charles<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.45016317973299946\" aria-label=\"Charles Desbassayns, Notes des Objets \u00e0 Observer comme Moyens de Contr\u00f4le et de Surveillance, in Recueil de documents et travaux in\u00e9dits pour servir \u00e0 l\u2019histoire des \u00eeles fran\u00e7aises de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an Indien, ADR, January 1984, page 21. He wished the crop to supply half of the food needed on the estate. \">&nbsp;<\/span>.<br \/>\nThe development of sugar cane thus appears to have depended on the presence of an abundant work force, with a large proportion of the agricultural land devoted to feeding the latter. Concerning this issue, we can quote a comment made by one of Madame Desbassayns\u2019 grandsons, who noted that his grandmother\u2019s views concerning the economy of the estate differed from, even conflicted with, those of her son Charles. She was convinced that sugar cane impoverished the soil and, since it required plantation owners to invest and therefore run up debts, would lead to their downfall<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.4883140053392667\" aria-label=\"Document entitled Pieux Souvenir, Archives of the Bishopric, shelf mark 4B.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. By favouring the continued production of food crops, she wished to ensure and guarantee food production for her many slaves, as well as ensuring the self-sufficiency of the estate.<\/p>\n<h3>Their conditions of work<br \/>\nStrict organisation and constant supervision<\/h3>\n<p>The slaves were supervised by a bailiff, responsible for making sure they carried out their daily tasks, defined by the employers, as well as applying the methods set out by the latter. Working under his orders was a whole battalion of guards and overseers. Charles Desbassayns had written out Instructions (\u2018<em>Notes<\/em>\u2019) in the form of a catalogue of observations and recommendations regarding each of the guards, overseers and group leaders, specifically named, with the aim of achieving maximum productivity from the servile work force<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.6511219332754423\" aria-label=\"Charles Desbassayns, Notes..., op.cit.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h4>The overseers and the guards: group leaders who remained slaves<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-409\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-3-frad974-98fi2-commandeur-porteur-d-eau-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-409 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-3-frad974-98fi2-commandeur-porteur-d-eau-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-3-frad974-98fi2-commandeur-porteur-d-eau-web.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-3-frad974-98fi2-commandeur-porteur-d-eau-web-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-3-frad974-98fi2-commandeur-porteur-d-eau-web-768x494.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Overseer. Jean-Baptiste Louis Dumas. 1849 <br \/>Departmental Archives of Reunion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The group leaders, referred to as overseers (\u2018<em>commandeurs<\/em>\u2019) occupied the highest rank possible for a slave to achieve. Their function consisted in commanding a group assigned to an activity or a clearly defined place, in the fields, the factory, the main house on the estate, or in the garden, to cut wood in the forest or collect coral on the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Those in charge of the chicken coop, the purifying vats in the factory, or of the teams of carpenters or sugar-cane labourers were given the title of \u2018chief\u2019<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.9802556193311416\" aria-label=\"Will of Madame Desbassayns, dated 20 June 1845.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. The overseers, men or women, were chosen through their capacity to be feared, but also for their competence in their field and for other qualities, notably skill and intelligence. Total submission was required of them, though Charles Desbassayns was forced to note that his instructions were not always carried out exactly and sometimes even noted a degree of complicity between his chiefs and those disobeying. He thus asked the bailiff to increase the number of random controls, to frequently switch the guards responsible for each task and, if necessary, to demote them<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.3861832826829008\" aria-label=\"Charles Desbassayns, Notes \u2026, op.cit., page 26.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Like the overseers, the guards were selected among those the master could trust. In Madame Desbassayns\u2019 will, drawn up in 1845, 23 were listed, of whom 10 or so were aged over 60. Contrary to what one might think, it was not an easy position, since every evening they had to give an account to the bailiff of everything accomplished or observed. The role of the guards on the estate was not simply to protect the fields from thieves. They also had to carry out a number of tasks, such as pruning trees, uprooting weeds, harvesting maize or making rope out of aloe fibre, known here as \u2018<em>choca<\/em>\u2019 (yucca) or \u2018<em>cad\u00e8re<\/em>\u2019. The women most often occupied posts in the yard or close to the main house. The woman in charge of guarding the hospital, who was also the nurse, took care of the patients and supervised their work, which included the manufacture of sacks for packaging, using \u2018<em>pandanus<\/em>\u2019 (screwpine) leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Whippings, mentioned in Charles Desbassayns\u2019 \u2018Instructions\u2019, were among the punishments meted out to guards<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.47354430671621195\" aria-label=\"Ibid., page 22.\">&nbsp;<\/span> as well as overseers.<\/p>\n<h4>The main groups of labourers: limited and adapted specialisation<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-407\" style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-2-frad974-98fi14-four-d-une-sucrerie-web.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-407 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-2-frad974-98fi14-four-d-une-sucrerie-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"653\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-2-frad974-98fi14-four-d-une-sucrerie-web.jpg 653w, https:\/\/www.portail-esclavage-reunion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ill-2-frad974-98fi14-four-d-une-sucrerie-web-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sugar-factory boiler. Jean-Baptiste Louis Dumas. 1849 <br \/>Departmental Archives of Reunion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1845, those referred to as \u2018<em>Noirs<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>N\u00e9gresses de pioche<\/em>\u2019<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.5020534864304664\" aria-label=\"Will of Madame Desbassayns.\">&nbsp;<\/span> \u2013 common labourers \u2013 accounted for close to 48% of the slaves with a defined role. They thus by far represented the majority of the workers. Taken literally, the word \u2018pioche\u2019 means \u2018pickaxe\u2019 and refers exclusively to those working in the fields. According to Madame Desbassayns\u2019 will (1845), there therefore remained only three workers and a single cart driver to work the factory and take care of all the transport. The will also mentions 16 mules and 39 oxen with their carts. Jean-Baptiste Louis Dumas. 1849<br \/>Departmental Archives of Reunion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As regards the number of workers and cart drivers, the extremely small number of them indicates that specialisation only concerned a limited number of workers. Since agriculture and sugar production were seasonal activities, a rational management of the work force required the latter to be adaptable, in order to transfer quickly and efficiently from one crop to another, from the field to the factory, from production to maintenance. This was in accordance with Charles Desbassayns\u2019 instructions, recommending training slaves to carry out several tasks<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.11358857515221077\" aria-label=\"Charles Desbassayns, Notes \u2026, op.cit., page 29.\">&nbsp;<\/span>. The majority of the common labourers (<em>Noirs de Pioche<\/em>), formed a category that was social rather than professional, making up the lowest ranks of the slave community.<\/p>\n<h4>Social relations based on mutual mistrust and fear<\/h4>\n<p>In his\u00a0\u2018Instructions\u2019, Charles Desbassayns declared that Africans would only work correctly if they were permanently supervised. He considered that the solution to the problem was to set up a strict organisation based on constant mutual supervision, random and repeated controls, various forms of punishment, from whippings to prison, as well as working on Sundays and being forbidden from leaving the estate. Since he could not keep an eye on or take care of everything, the bailiff had to \u2018<em>create eyes and legs everywhere, a substitute spirit and memory<\/em>\u2019<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.28822980027074263\" aria-label=\"Ibid., page 18. \">&nbsp;<\/span>, with each being constantly on the alert.<\/p>\n<p>No oversight or failure to respect the regulations was to be tolerated by the bailiff. Charles Desbassayns thus appears as a cold and methodical company director, whose main concern was to get the most out of a submissive and totally exploited work force.<\/p>\n<p>With such practices, the atmosphere reigning over the whole of the estate could not be other than tense and social relations conflictual, since based on mutual fear and mistrust. However, the bailiff was also instructed not to be too harsh with slaves deserting for just a few days, instead of placing them in irons or locking them up for too long a period<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.9359210409564198\" aria-label=\"Charles Desbassayns, Notes \u2026, op.cit., pages 25, 26 and 33.\">&nbsp;<\/span>, since they needed to recover their strength and courage. Like those of the indentured workers who replaced them after 1848, their huts were constructed using materials present on the estate: various tree trunks and branches and vetiver leaves, sugar-cane straw and long grasses from the area of savannah grassland for the roof. For clothes, the only thing we know is that they were dressed \u2018<em>well enough for the mild climate of Bourbon island<\/em>\u2019<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.37133299995564095\" aria-label=\"Jean Baptiste de Vill\u00e8le, Notice Biographique of Madame Desbassayns, written 1846, re-edited by the Historical Museum of Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, 1992, page 45. \">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Their huts were mainly used to shelter them when asleep after the long exhausting days\u2019 labour. Each morning, when the bell rang, with the exception of two guards, they would leave the camp and gather in groups to go to their place of work. According to Abbot Macquet<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.26186012645157475\" aria-label=\"Abb\u00e9 Macquet, Six ann\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00cele Bourbon, op.cit. Appointed vicar to the parish of Saint-Paul on 1st July 1844, he spent six years there and often visited Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts. To describe the slaves leaving their camp, he used the terms \u2018escouades\u2019, (squads) \u2018d\u00e9curies\u2019 (assembly) and \u2018d\u00e9curions\u2019 (decurions), all terms reminiscent of ancient qui Rome.\">&nbsp;<\/span>, the discipline was virtually military. The children were looked after by a domestic slave (\u2018<em>N\u00e9gresse de cour<\/em>\u2019) who, in charge of the joyful group, also had to sweep all around the mansion and make sure the area around the factory was kept clean. Jean-Joseph Patu de Rosement. 1818 <br \/>Departmental Archives of Reunion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No-one was allowed into the camp during the day and the slaves had to wait until all the groups returned before going back into the huts, once each guard, supervisor of commander had transmitted his day\u2019s report to the bailiff.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Desbassayns\u2019 Instructions also indicate that the slaves\u2019 meals, both for adults and children, lunch and evening meal, were prepared collectively in a slaves\u2019 kitchen located in the yard of the main house on the estate. The adults\u2019 rations were taken out to their place of work, where they were distributed by those in charge of the work groups. \u201c<em>On Sundays, they were given to the Africans in person<\/em>\u201d<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.49175529270232765\" aria-label=\"On the estate of Ravine \u00e0 Marquet, visited by Billiard in 1817, the latter notes that \u201cthe group rushed towards the smoke-filled hut, where the old cook was preparing two large pots of food: one of broad beans and the other of corn; each slave, to take part in the distribution, held out a battered old calabash, a wooden dish, half a coconut or simply a strip of banana leaf.\u201d\">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The only time the slaves were allowed some rest was Sunday afternoon. All morning, until one o\u2019clock, they had to carry out chores consisting in cleaning, mainly the factory, but also the other agricultural buildings. For Charles Desbassayns\u00a0\u201c<em>this day of scrubbing and cleaning<\/em>\u201d contributed to keeping up their interest, attachment and even passion for their work. On that day, if potatoes had been harvested, they were allowed to go and gather any that had been left behind, leaving the field clean once they finished. Presented as a favour granted to them, this was, in fact, a way of making them clean the fields to prepare them for sowing once again.<\/p>\n<p>The terms used by Abbot Macquet when describing the slaves departure from the camp in the morning give the impression of them as being a human herd, divided up into groups taken to their place of work each day, under threat of their overseer<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.9616609554606856\" aria-label=\"The abbot Macquet compared the camp to \u201ca true workers\u2019 housing estate, criss-crossed by roads going in all directions; all the huts face the street, to facilitate supervision.\u201d \">&nbsp;<\/span>. In fact, more than one third of the slaves living in the camp had a family life. Madame Desbassayns\u2019 will lists fifty or so households, sometimes with several children, representing a total of 25% of the slave population. Men and women of over 16 were greatly in the majority (69%), but with quite a large number being over 60 (9%). If we also count the 28 slaves described as being sick, weak or infirm, that gives a fairly large proportion of totally or partly non-productive workers on the estate. Consequently, each slave was given an occupation adapted to his or her age and physical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Slave couples on the estate were united by religion and the children born were given the sacrament of baptism<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.9143883445537588\" aria-label=\"Mentioned in Henri Paulin\u2019s log book in the 1760s. These marriages became more common after 1843, the year the <em>Chapelle Pointue<\/em> chapel was constructed<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.45360617718999396\" aria-label=\"Sometimes celebrated on the same day, they often appear to have been regularisations of unions existing for a certain time, since many of the couples were over 30 or 40 years of age. \">&nbsp;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Decided and organised by Madame Desbassayns, these religious ceremonies presented her with the opportunity to give her slaves French names. Through her attempts to give them a sense of family and its values, she almost certainly wished to instil in them an attachment to the estate and its masters. In a letter dated 4th October 1821 addressed to her son Charles, she expressed her fear of seeing them mistreated by inexperienced white managers<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.08998114290372494\" aria-label=\"It would be a great source of (anguish) for me to find myself in the hands of these young persons who have absolutely no experience and who could torment my slaves.\u201d Private family archives, document made available by Christel and Auguste de Vill\u00e8le. \">&nbsp;<\/span>. In this respect, she applied the same objectives as her son Charles<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.06332605477765196\" aria-label=\"In his Notes (pages 33-34), when he mentions a small family livestock-farming structure in the camp, he immediately indicates the connected punishments: in the event of any other faults committed, the slave who owns the livestock is refused permission to go to town to sell the products. \">&nbsp;<\/span>, if less brutally, these being productivity and the cost-effectiveness of the estate, as well as the long-term existence of her business, on the eve of the abolition of the system of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Madame Desbassayns died in 1846, two years before that event so greatly feared by the masters. Her grandson and successor Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric de Vill\u00e8le seemed to share her concerns: in November 1848, he freed six former slaves trusted by his grandmother, including five overseers, making them his own personal guards<span class=\"NOTE_MARKER\" rel=\"0.7356334605380617\" aria-label=\"BO (Official Bulletin) 1848, page 591.\">&nbsp;<\/span>.
