The <em>Pocha <\/em>had 220 men, women and children on board, all of whom had been enslaved. ME.2017.1.2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The case of the capture of the <em>Pocha<\/em>, as well as the fate of the enslaved people following their \u2018liberation\u2019, leads us to examine the nature and results of the French navy\u2019s efforts to suppress the slave trade in the Indian Ocean between the 1840s and 1900.
