However, the atlas is an essential tool for understanding the way in which slavery had an impact on the territory, men and women and their memory, in different fields of the society.<\/p>\n<h4>Why an atlas?<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 An atlas is a collection of maps making it possible to localise and carry out a spatial reading of historical facts. It provides an understanding of the evolution of the latter, chronologically and geographically.<\/p>\n<h4>Comprehensive information<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 The atlas will indicate the physical and symbolic locations linked to slavery:<br \/>\n&#8211; Former estates<br \/>\n&#8211; Places of maroon settlements (escaped slaves)<br \/>\n&#8211; Places and objects of memory<br \/>\n&#8211; Material and immaterial heritage<br \/>\n&#8211; Toponyms or elements of slavery in the landscape<br \/>\n&#8211; Public structures of research and culture (archives, university, museums, resource centres etc.)<br \/>\n&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The atlas will indicate all available identified information linked to each location.<\/p>\n<h4>A modern and accessible tool<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 The atlas will be digital, freely open for online consultation, dynamic, intuitive and interactive.<br \/>\n\u2022 It will be added to as research and knowledge progress<br \/>\n\u2022 It may be published in the form of a physical atlas<\/p>\n<h4>A federating and collaborative tool<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Carrying out such a project is a complex process.
