Stone

This basalt stone statue represents the slave Hevá with her child in her arms. Created by artist Gilbert Clain, this sculpture is installed near the Pont de l’Escalier at the entrance to Salazie.
She was the wife of Anchaing, a legend among escaped slaves, and is depicted here fleeing her slave-owners with her child, climbing to the almost inaccessible summit of a peak in Salazie, today known as ‘Piton d’Anchaing’.
