This memorial in honour of the slave Edmond Albius was installed in Le Bocage on 10th May, 2004. It is a tribute to the slave who, at the age of only 12, discovered how to manually fertilise the vanilla plant.
Designed by artist Jack Beng-Thi, this bronze sculpture represents the slave holding a vanilla liana in his hand. The statue is enclosed within a circular stone wall covered with information boards describing slavery and the slave trade.
